Style a Garden

Are you sitting at your desk right now? On the couch? What do you see when you look around? Does your space make you happy? No? Let’s fix that by connecting with nature and bringing it into view.

Style your outdoor space…

First, let me say, going to town with clippers, or a shovel, in your neighbor’s yard is generally frowned upon. Focus instead on what you have access to, be it an acre or your apartment balcony.

What areas can you add plants, vegetables, and flowers to that can be seen and enjoyed easily by you while you are working inside your home? Do you have areas of your yard or balcony that could be made more inviting, encouraging you or your family to take your lunch or your Zoom call outside? Observe your outside space from your windows, from your office chair and then put a plan in place to beautify your view. Plant flowers that you love, or vegetables you can harvest for your meals. Make your outdoor space an extension of your live/work space.

Style your indoor space too…

Do you have window sills or shelves indoors where you could introduce flowers, or potted plants? They don’t require work in the form of weeding but if you get off your couch a few times a day to talk to them or sing to them, it will make you both feel better! Adding a plant to your workspace will add appeal and might even boost your productivity. You will also be surprised at the people who will notice and want to talk about their plants with you after your video call.

I noticed an apartment balcony the other day with numerous potted plants surrounding an exercise bike. Brilliant! Who said we have to exercise in the basement? Take it outside! Enjoy the fresh air and greenery.

Find your center in nature, indoors and out. Plants and trees stand strong, grow, produce and die back with the seasons. Life marches on and so do we. The nature around us will help us find our rhythm if we just listen.
